5G – Here’s what you need to know

5G mobile connectivity

We are beginning to witness the roll out of 5G connectivity in the UK, with EE launching the service at the beginning of the Summer and Vodafone due to follow in July.

What is 5G?

5G is the newest generation of connectivity for mobile internet, which follows the current widely used 4G network. 5G promises to offer users better reliability and faster speeds for connectivity across smartphones and other enabled devices.

Speaking to RISE. about 5G earlier this year, Grapevine’s James Spinks commented on the benefits of this new technology for consumers and service providers alike.

“From a user’s perspective, 5G will fundamentally change how connectivity, applications and content are consumed, whilst from a provider’s perspective, 5G presents enormous opportunities for network efficiency to deliver innovative services. The superior specification of the 5G platform will change the game for both mobile and fixed communications. The promise of faster, more agile and secure wireless technology provides the opportunity to bring scalability, security and universal mobility across the telecommunications industry, with expected benefits to all industries from improved broadcasting to automation through IOT.”

When can I access 5G?

5G is available now via EE in 6 cities (London, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, Belfast and Cardiff) across the UK on 5G enabled devices. They will be extending coverage to a further 10 cities (Bristol, Coventry, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield) later in 2019, followed by a wider UK rollout in 2020.

Vodafone are set to launch their 5G coverage on Wednesday 3rd July 2019. From this date it will be available on 5G enabled devices in 7 UK cities (Glasgow, London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cardiff and Bristol), with 12 others (Birkenhead, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Guildford, Newbury, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Warrington and Wolverhampton) to follow before the end of 2019.

To access 5G connectivity you will need a 5G enabled device. Speak to your account manager to register your interest in availability of 5G enabled devices from Grapevine.
